The Chinese Farmer

An Ancient Chinese Parable

A long time ago in ancient China, there lived a farmer who lost a horse. It ran away.

That night all the villagers gathered at his door and said, “That’s too bad isn’t it?” But the farmer simply replied,

“Maybe.”

The next day the horse came back and brought with it 7 wild stallions.

The neighbors saw the animals and greeted the famer by saying, “That’s wonderful isn’t it?” But the farmer simply replied,

“Maybe.”

The next day the farmer’s son attempted to tame one of these stallions. When he got on its back the horse threw him off, breaking both of the son’s legs.

The neighbors came by that night to console the farmer. “That’s too bad isn’t it?” But the farmer simply replied,

“Maybe.”

The next day imperial officers marched into the small village looking to recruit soldiers for their army. When they saw the farmer’s son they rejected him for his broken legs.

The neighbors gathered round to celebrate. “That’s wonderful isn’t it?”  But the farmer simply replied,

“Maybe.”

It’s impossible for us to predict the consequences of our fortune or misfortune. As traders, a bad trade can teach a vital lesson or end a trading career. A great trade can start an illustrious trading career or a string of devastating habits. Be like the ancient farmer and stay wise and wary in all circumstances.
